Lumia 630 smartphone is the first to run Windows Phone 8.1, a new version of the operating system that Microsoft hopes will finally allow it to compete on an even footing with Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.
Launching the new software on the platform’s main budget device is intended to build on its success at the lower end of the market, which helped establish Windows Phone as the fastest growing platform and securing it the number three position behind Android and iOS.

The 4.5” screen and quadcore processor will power the same “features [and] award-winning design and experiences found on high -end Lumia smartphones,” Microsoft claimed. A 4G model, the 635, is will also be launched in the near future.
Later this year Windows 8.1 devices will also feature Cortana, the personal voice assistant that Microsoft claims will be more intelligent than Apple’s Siri and Google’s voice search.
Conor Pierce, vice president of Microsoft Devices for the UK & Ireland said “The Nokia Lumia 630 offers great apps and high end technology. This is a great product for our customers, providing a premium experience at an affordable price point. In our opinion, this is the best smartphone in its price range on the market today.”
The launch came just days after Motorola, formerly owned by Google, announced the Moto E for the same price.
